A Message from our District Governor
Thank you to the clubs who have so warmly welcomed me during the start of my Governor visits. If you didn’t already know this, the food must be one reason for great attendance at meetings. As I have mentioned during my visits, fired chicken seems to be the highlight on many menus and I am very tempted to ask clubs to bring samples to the District Conference next April to settle the question of which club truly has the BEST!

Club events have begun and I will continue to include information on exciting things to do around the District with your help. Please remember to email the details to me at WeDigRotary@gmail.com. And, please send photos of the events. Let’s IMAGINE using this site to attract, retain and engage members as we celebrate the great works and services our clubs provide to their communities and beyond.

The Rotary Club of Summit submitted a short story about their club and basketball gym. Please take a few minutes to learn how one club continues to serve their community. If you want your club featured, please send me an email.

Thanks to Mike Sigler for helping to make RYLA so very successful this past summer. Enjoy reading about the accomplishments of the students.

Just in case you are looking for fun events this month, please check out a few ideas for September:

Rotary Membership Minute: a final thought.
A vibrant club is not just one that’s managed well. It’s one whose members are cared for and who have a voice in shaping the club’s culture.

How is your club fostering an environment where all members and visitors feel welcome, feel that they belong, and feel comfortable being themselves? Asking individual members for their ideas and opinions can help your club make sure it’s offering what members need. Having genuine friendships and connections with others in your club evokes a sense of gratitude and the desire to give back, not just to the community, but to the club and to other members.

See you at the Alligator Festival!!!!!

What's My Club?

If you haven’t begun submitting your responses to What’s My Club for August, please do so. Because we have been a bit slow in getting the Newsletters directly to your email address, you have until September 30, 2022 to respond to both the August and September challenges.
This month’s clues:

Name two clubs which received their charter on the same date?
Name the newest Rotary Club in our district? (not Rotaract Clubs)
Name the most recent Past District Governor and his  home club (2021-22)
Name the club that hosts the Alligator Festival?
Name the primary host club for the 2022-23 District Conference
Name the first 4 clubs chartered in our District with the dates of each charter
Name the home club of the current District Governor
Name the primary host club for the 2022-23 District Conference
Please submit your stories and your tidbits here: Rotary Newsletter Submission - https://forms.gle/p6kq6ApoftBKF3Cp8

FEATURED CLUB OF THE MONTH: ROTARY CLUB OF SUMMIT

The Rotary Club of Summit Rotary was founded in 1938 with Gordon Covington (Gordon Covington Memorial Gym) one of the members when the basketball program first started. For several years the Summit Rotary Basketball program was the only basketball program in the area giving rise to the statement "you had (in the area) Baseball and Summit Rotary Basketball".

When the Summit MS rotary club started helping the youth with the basketball program one of the venues was a gym not owned by the Summit rotary club in East McComb MS. This gym burned down and that was the impetus for the construction of the current gym. When the club had to put a new roof on the E. McComb gym it had to insure it. So when it burned down the club got the insurance money from that and as a result had 50K on hand. Nathan Wells was at the time the President elect and the most outspoken member in support of a building owned by the club, "so at the unanimous decision of the club" he was selected to spearhead the effort to build a gym.

When the building was first constructed in the early 90's it was just the shell with the construction all the interior rooms, the stands, tables and painting along with all the electrical work done by members with help from the community all donating professional time and effort. The amount over the 50K was raised by fundraisers and donations so that with the vision and perseverance of the members, the Summit club was able to erect a 200K gym for about 120K (1990 prices). The address is 4010 Robb Street West Summit MS (mailing address P.O. Box 94).

An interesting note is that gym floor was the practice floor used by Bobby Knight was able to be bought by the club and with the donation of time and effort by local carpenters the gym has a suspended playing floor. For those wondering during the time after the gym in E. McComb MS burned and the first use of the new building the basketball program continued mostly held at the gyms at SMCC (Southwest MS Community College).

The Pancake Breakfast - One of the original fundraisers - has become an area favorite and is held in conjunction with the Summit MS Fall Festival which is held the second weekend in October, the date this year is the 8th.

RYLA IS BACK!!
RYLA 2022 was a big success. 54 rising high school seniors along with a dozen counselors and staff from all corners of District 6840 assembled at the Solomon Retreat center in Loranger Louisiana. The camp ran from July 10th through the 15th. During the week the students listened to several presentations and participated in dozens of exercises learning several cornerstones of leadership such as self-confidence, relationship building, conflict resolution, public speaking  and time management. Speakers travelled from faraway places such as New York, Michigan and California to make our program top-notch.
The campers also learned a great deal about Rotary. The campers were divided into smaller groups. Each group researched and conducted presentations on Rotary’s current areas of focus: Promoting Peace, Fighting Disease, Providing Clean Water, Serving Mothers and Children, Supporting Education, Growing Local Economies and Supporting the Environment.
In keeping with the spirit of Rotary’s motto Service Above Self, the group battled mosquitos,
raindrops and warm temps to participate in a walk-a-thon raising over $ 10,000 for Grace Girls Home, an orphanage in Ski Lanka.
Rotary does so many wonderful things. Investing in the youth of our district is a paramount endeavor. We encourage our campers to participate in Rotary programs such as Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Exchange plus others. Our goal is to educate, impower and motivate these young people to use their talents, time and treasure to serve others.
Special thanks to all the clubs who sponsored the participating students and to the clubs that donated funds to the program. We also thank the Rotarians who visited the camp (and brought food to feed these hungry teens) during our annual “Rotary Night at RYLA” and the Rotarians who served as presenters.
Next year will be District 6840’s 30th anniversary of its RYLA Program. Let’s set a goal to increase club participation in this worthwhile district-wide program.

KEEP COVINGTON BEAUTFUL RIVER SWEEP!
The Covington Rotary Club is an important partner of Keep Covington Beautiful.  Every year, we float a team of members on the Bogue Falaya to help keep our river clean.
The sign ups are handled through the KCB website, so keep checking back for updates.
We encourage everyone -- members of all Rotary Clubs with an interest in a service project in the "Sustaining the Environment" Area of Focus to bring their families for a morning on the water; usually the launch is from the Menetre Boat Launch (4th Avenue).  KCB provides the grabbers and bags and we pool the refuse at Bogue Falaya Park.  This event is part of a national River Sweep and the tally will be entered into the national data.  Awards for the most unusual thing pulled out of the water and others.  A picnic lunch is provided by KCB at the pavilion in the park.  The Club will provide return transportation to the boat launch for anyone who doesn't want to paddle back.

Territory Resource Networks (TRNs)

Greetings, my fellow Rotary Leaders,

Since last spring we have discussed the future organization of the District.  We announced the creation of Territory Resource Networks to serve multiple purposes:
  • Offer Rotarians willing to take a small step outside of their clubs into the surrounding clubs in their territory an opportunity to work in their Area of Passion (AOP).  These are:
    • Membership
    • Foundation
    • Public Image
    • Service
    • Club Administration
    • Youth Services
  • Create committees in these AOPs under the direction of the Deputy Governors for each of these.  Because many of these are one person committees, filling the Deputy Governor roles has often been difficult.  With the training and experience gained in the TRNs, it should be easier to enlist well qualified Rotarians into these roles.
  • Provide subject matter experts to Assistant Governors who will have TRN members in their territories.  This will give AGs well qualified Rotarians in each AOP who can assist clubs with questions, make presentations and capture and share best practices inside the territory and district.  This will also provide a pool of well qualified talent, that, having worked with the AG, might accept that role when it opens.
  • Create a pool of future District leaders who have gained experience within their territories.
  • Harness the energy and interest of Rotarians by providing them with an avenue to become further involved without committing to what they see as the intimidation of accepting a position as an Assistant Governor or Deputy Governor.

Proud to Serve to Change Lives with you,

Bob Vaughn
