Black Friday in Moss Point, Mississippi is more than just the day after Thanksgiving for the Rotary Club of Moss Point. It is our day to Ring the Bell for the Salvation Army. For the last 10 years, we take our appointed turns greeting folks at the door of the local Piggly Wiggly, one of the only grocery stores in town. It always inspires us when folks go out of their way to find bills or coins to drop in the bucket. We often see folks we know and chat about whatever. That is community, after all. Our mission this year is to inspire local groups to also commit to ringing those bells across our territory and the coast, as the Salvation Army often has to hire folks to do the ringing if volunteers are not available, paid for by funds collected in the kettles. We of course are not the only Rotary Club that rings those bells, but if we are truly representative of the communities we serve, surely, Rotary Clubs can inspire others to volunteer.
